Emma Pattinson is a textile conservator and community worker based in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Emma is a practising textile conservator with an MPhil in Textile Conservation from the University of Glasgow’s Kelvin Centre for Conservation and Cultural Heritage (University of Glasgow).

She spent her student placement at the Organic Artefacts Conservation Studio at the British Museum, where she worked on a range of projects including exhibition-preparation, devising packing for international loans and improving storage for archaeological textile fragments. Emma was the Leslie B. Durst Textile Conservation Intern at the National Museums of Scotland (NMS) 2023-24, where she prepared textile objects for the Summer 2024 exhibition, ‘The Cold War in Scotland’ and cared for the museum’s collection of embroidery samplers. Following that, she was promoted to Assistant Textile Conservator on a fixed-term contract, working on the conservation of two large painted silk flags. She is now a permanent (part time) member of staff at the NMS. She holds an MSc in Community Education and is on the Institute for Conservation’s Accreditation Pathway.

Her freelance work has included documenting and recommending future care measures for an embroidered wall hanging for Girlguiding Scotland, and undertaking a survey of the costume collection held by the Bermuda National Trust.

Emma enjoys taking on private work and would love to hear from you if you have questions about a potential project!
